ABC Wednesday - K is for ....

The song I have chosen this week is truly a beautiful song and beautifully sung.

It brings back many memories of the past.

Killing me softly - by Roberta Flack

Composed by Charles Fox and written by Norman Gimbel. this was originally sung by Lori Lieberman but became a number 1 hit for Roberta Flack in 1973.  And it was her version that I first heard and loved. This is a song that is unforgettable. So many songs have "killed us softly".

In 1999 Roberta Flack's version was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and is ranked #360 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. It is also ranked #82 on Billboard's Greatest Songs of all Time.

Youtube - Killing me softly.

My Bollywood choice this week is

Kora Kagaz from the super hit movie Aradhana. Starring Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore and sung by the legendary Kishore Kumar.

This is one of the super hit romantic songs of Bollywood.

Wish you a day when the Universe is truly kind.

Six Word Saturday - Smiles

Yay - The Gods are smiling again

We've had such atrocious weather recently. It's like the sun just decided to sleep and the wind and the rain waged war on the earth (in my part of the world anyway).

But the last 2 days have been absolutely beautiful.

It's been warm and sunny, a cloud or two (oh so rare for Welly) and a nice gentle breeze (another rarity for Welly - it's usually blowing a gale here!)

So I am enjoying the sunshine and warm days. And I can spend sometime in my garden too. My garden is starting to look colourful again and I love walking barefoot on the grass and connecting with nature.

Hope the Gods are smiling in your part of the world too.

ABC Wednesday - J is for ...

Just the song for the J prompt

One of my favourites and sung by none other than Billy Joel

Just The Way You Are

written and sung by Billy Joel was released in 1977. It reached number 1 on the US Billboard Easy Listening chart and won the 1978 Grammy Awards for Record of the year and Song of the year.

Youtube - Just the way you are

And my Bollywood choice is

Jis Gali Mein Tera

from the movie Kati Patang starring Asha Parekh and Rajesh Khanna and sung by the legendary Mukesh.

One of the most beautiful songs from the Bollywood films. They don't make songs like this anymore.

Haiku - Grass and Escape

Haiku Heights - Grass

A blade of grass, cut
Wisdom from the ancient texts
Universe quivers

Grass, sea and the sky
Earth, the playground of the Gods
And youthful escape

In the tall lush grass
The tiger swiftly escapes
Man shows no mercy

Releasing life's stress
An escape to paradise
Meditation rocks

Six Word Saturday - Willpower

My willpower flew out the window

So all week I have been watching what I eat and getting back into the routine of exercise. Yay. I feel good already.

And then I walked into the supermarket - chippies on sale, a rainbow cake. Oh yum. Will power went bye-bye.

Or perhaps I should not be too harsh on myself and allow a little indulgence now and then.

ABC Wednesday - I is for ...

I thought a lot about this prompt as there are so many songs that I would like to post: Il Mondo,  I'll Never Find Another You,  Isa Lei, I'll Meet You Halfway and many others.

In the end I chose ....

Imagine - John Lennon

I'm actually recycling a post I did nearly a year ago.

"Imagine" was written and sung by John Lennon himself and released in 1971.

In 2004 "Rolling Stone" ranked it 3rd in it's list of "500 Greatest Songs of All Time"

The main theme of the song was Lennon's message of giving peace a chance - imagining a world that lives in peace.

I didn't quite understand or appreciate it as a child, but now it definitely features on my top 20.

I think it's a very spiritual song.

My Bollywood choice this week is ...

It's The Time To Disco - from the movie Kal Ho Na Ho (2003)

starring Preity Zinta, Saif Ali Khan, and Shahrukh Khan

The music is conducted by Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa. The lyrics are by Javed Akhtar. The soundtrack became one of the most successful music albums of the year.

Wishing you a day when imagination runs wild or maybe it's the time to disco!  In other words, enjoy your day and have a blast.

Six Word Saturday - Rain

Raindrops keep falling on my head

So I just did me some talking to the sun
I said I didn't like the way he got things done
Sleeping on the job
Those raindrops keep falling on my head they keep falling.

This week we've seen the sun once. The rain's been pouring down, the wind gusting to gale force.

Yesterday as I was on my way home on the bus, the thought came into my head:  Are the Gods angry when the rain thunders down or are they blessing the earth with nourishment?

Either way, today I'm tired of the rain and the winds that are hammering my house all around.

A little sunshine would be nice. So c'mon Sun, please Show Your Face

Have a sunny weekend.

GBE2 - Déjà Vu

The year was 1987, the place was Mumbai, India.

I had a strange dream.

I dreamt that one morning when I woke up I saw an entire street covered in snow - the roofs of the houses all white.

This was a very strange dream as there were no little houses in my street in Mumbai and it never snows there. In fact it's never cold there - I am of course comparing the cold to New Zealand for cold is quite subjective  And the little houses or the street that I saw certainly didn't exist anywhere in Mumbai.

And so the dream was stored away in the tiny compartments of my brain and forgotten.

The year was 2011, the place was Wellington, New Zealand and a bitterly cold winter.

It snowed all over New Zealand right down to sea level. I moved to Wellington in 1988 and in my 24 years here the 2011 snowfall was the first ever. In fact it was the first down to sea level in 50 years.

I stood in my garden ready to click the pictures when I had this strange sensation come over me and my mind went zooming back to that dream in Mumbai.

For the scene before me was just like that dream back then.

Was this Déjà Vu?  Or was that Déjà Vu as well?

Here's the picture I took that day that was just like the scene in my dream.

It was but yesterday we met in a dream.
If in the twilight of memory we should meet once more,
We shall speak again together and you shall sing to me a deeper song.

~ Khalil Gibran, The Prophet (my favourite book of all time)

Linking to the GBE2 prompt "Déjà Vu"

Have a dreamy day.

ABC Wednesday - H is for ....

How could I not post a song that features on the Rolling Stones list of the 500 greatest songs of all time?

How Deep Is Your Love - Bee Gees

Written and recorded by the Bee Gees in 1977 and used as part of the soundtrack for the film Saturday Night Fever. It is listed at No 20 on the Billboard's All Time Top 100.

It is one of the most covered songs (performed / recorded by several artists) in the Gibb catalogue of song.

And it's my favourite Bee Gees number.

Youtube - How deep is your love

My Bollywood song choice this week is

Humein Tumse Pyar Kitna (How much do I love you)

From the movie Kudrat starring Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini.

The song is sung twice in the movie first by Parveen Sultana and then by Kishore Kumar.

The lyrics of the song are beautiful and written by Majrooh Sultanpuri with music by RD Burman.

Here is Kishore Kumar's version

It's the time to Haiku - Colour

Haiku Heights - Colour

(which I take to mean "any topic")

Colours of my life
Resemble nature's seasons
Blended together

The artist's paintbrush
Splashes of colours transform
Brings canvas to life

Pink and red roses
Sparkling eyes and tender smile
The colours of love

Six Word Saturday Sept 1 GBE2 Peace

Peace? definitely not the way today

Today is the first day of Spring in New Zealand and the day started out absolutely beautiful and serenely quiet.  Peace was the way, or so I thought.

Obviously my neighbours have other ideas.

I have one blasting out his music so loud that even though he's 3 houses away and all my doors and windows are shut, I can still hear the dreadful stuff loud and clear.

Another one has just started up his lawn mower and the planes are flying above as it's the Southerlies blowing today.

Even the birds are protesting with loud chirping.

Here's hoping all of you are having a peaceful day and let's hope soon peace will be the way today for me too.
